Final Retriever Trial Results - Novice Trial January 26th 2023

Our final trial of the 2022/2023 season was held on 26th January at Shawcroft Farm near Holmes Chapel, by kind permission of Mr John Wainwright. This was the first time a trial had been held at the ground, and what a spectacular venue it proved to be. The Guns shot extremely well, giving the judges, David Latham, David Jackson, Louise Munchaus-Adsboel and Sharon Kitson, a variety of retrieves on open fields, across a stream and into woodland  with which to test the dogs.

Several dogs fell by the wayside, but eventually the judges decided to award

first place to Phil Gouden with Turpingreen Espinoza,

second place to Alan Rees with Jockburn Macey at Delfyd and

CoM to Vikki Stanley with Minstead Reacher.

Phil was awarded the Society’s new trophy, the Dennis Heath Trophy, which is to honour all the hard work Dennis has put into the club over many years as treasurer.

The Society extends its grateful thanks to our host, John Wainwright, the Guns, the judges, all those who came along to help and our very kind sponsors, Skinner’s.

Special thanks to John Yarwood for all his help and to the very kind person who donated the delicious pies for lunchtime!!

Finally, Happy Birthday to David Latham (26th January) and thanks to Kim Dutton for the amazing birthday cake!

Judges: Jamie Bettinson (A2299) Steve Cullis (A2759) Paula Cullis (B2704) Craig Perry (B3550)

On both days the dogs were taken to stubble fields at the back of Checkley Wood and walked through open stubble fields, some fodder turnip and a large piece of gone to seed set aside. Dogs and handlers were given some testing retrieves, some long, some closer to the line, but with enough difficulty to leave 11 dogs for day two. The second day took the dogs along Checkley brook and out into another stubble field, giving some long and challenging retrieves. By lunchtime just five dogs remained and the judges declared the trial over.

Second - Etomanni Missouri handled by Ronnie Laughton

Third - Wytonruss Finnigan handled by Ronnie Laughton

Fourth - Staverton Tarragon handled by Julia Reed

Novice AV Retriever Trial October 2022

Novice AV Retriever trial, 3rd October 2022

Judges: Sean McGrath (A3010), Dawn Scott (B3643) Reuben Mort (NP2977) and Phil Goulden (NP3680)

The trial started by walking through a small field of cover crop, and then into a larger field of setaside. Birds came steadily to the Guns who shot well, providing the judges with some interesting retrieves for the dogs. The judges stretched the length of the retrieves as the trial progressed, with dogs being put out for failing to find or being eye wiped. Although there were some excellent dogs in the trial, on the last retrieve all four remaining dogs failed to find a cock pheasant 70 yards away and were eye-wiped by the judges.

There were no awards.

Retriever Field Trial Results 2021

The Society held four trials in 2021, all held at Checkley Wood Shoot by kind permission of Ivor Beavis; a novice and open retriever trial and a novice and open spaniel trial. The Society is extremely grateful to all the people who made the trials a success; the judges, volunteer helpers and especially the Guns who support the trials and help make them financially viable.

Novice AV Retriever trial, 27th September 2021

Judges: Dave Brown, Vikki Stanley, Peter Thompson, Carole Clarke

The trial was held in a stubble field, with many of the shot birds falling into rough ground at the edge of Checkley Brook. The thick cover proved too much for some of the novice dogs, with many failing to find or being eye wiped.  Towards the end of the trial the birds were falling into open ground but scenting conditions were poor and the last four dogs were put out after failing to find a bird in a grass field.

There were no awards.

Open 24 dog Open AV Retriever trial 25th/26th October 2021

Judges: David Latham, Nik Coates, Neil Appleton, Judith White

The first day of the trial was held in Margaret’s Cover patch where partridges were falling in the crop, over the fence into the field or in cover by the lake. After two rounds there were just five dogs left to go through to the second day. Day 2 was held in another cover crop alongside a wood. The first bird shot was quickly retrieved but the second bird proved more elusive and eventually put four dogs out of the trial having been retrieved by the judges. The last dog standing completed three more retrieves and was pronounced the winner.

1st – Tony O’Hare’s Burrendale Ace

Guns’ Choice - Kevin Butler’s Turpingreen Bohol

Keeper’s Choice – Mark Demaine’s Brockmarsh Ethan of Caytonfell
